Day 13: Silver City, YT to Fairbanks, AK
Day 13, May 23, 2003: Today we were made breakfast by the hosts of the Kluane B&B, and then headed W. again on the dreaded Alcan around 10:15 am. You’ve never seen anything like it. There was one portion where they had a pilot car guide us through the detour route because it was so bad. On Sheep mountain, shortly after Silver City, we spotted 8 baby dall sheep ewes. 5 rams, and several lambs high up on the mtn with the help of spotting scopes and the Canada national park visitor center staff. We learned that only 1 in 3 babies survive because of weather, and predators like coyotes, wolves, grizzlies, and golden eagles who will pick up a baby ewe, and drop them from flight. Once we crossed back into Alaska, the road seemed to improve somewhat, particularly after Tok. After Delta Junction, in the evening, we saw 5 moose including a cow and her two calves
around 6:30 pm All very impressive. Tonight we camped at the last tent site available at the Ester CG in FBK for the memorial day weekend while we find Bryan a place to live. Total milage today = 467 Total mileage for entire trip = 4148 miles !! Hee haw, we made it!! Best trip of our lives, though we’re both ready to be out of the car. Long live Saturn Vues!!
